Getting to Know GMC

GMC has a storied history and legacy that carries into every new vehicle they produce. This brand was started all the way back in 1900 by the Grabowsky Brothers of Detroit, first as the Grabowsky Motor Company and then as the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company. In 1909, General Motors bought the company and folded it into its ranks; by 1912, the new moniker was dropped in favor of "GMC," and the nameplate we all know and love was born!

In its early days, GMC was known for focusing on trucks, buses, and military vehicles—vehicles used for commercial purposes. All were built with toil and durability in mind. This was crucial when WWII began, and GMC was called to produce for the war effort. During these years, over 500,000 trucks with the GMC nameplate were manufactured; these included the “Jimmy,” a GMC CCKW 2 1/2-ton 6×6 truck. This model was the original "Deuce and a Half," which was legendary for supplying the Allied forces as they pushed east after the Normandy landings.

After WWII, GMC—along with much of the Western world—experienced a time of great innovation. They broadened their scope beyond commercial and military purposes and began focusing on the individual driver. They began producing light-duty trucks and SUVs that were more efficient and more suited to suburban life without losing the power and performance needed for handling rough terrain.

Today, GMC is a key brand within General Motors’ lineup. It has stood the test of time by building on its legacy of durability and ruggedness while leaning into consumer needs and continually innovating. Thus, GMC’s lineup today includes some of the most capable trucks and SUVs on the market.

The ever-popular GMC Sierra performs consistently highly in the full-size truck market; it can handle large payloads as well as tough trailering jobs, making it the ideal companion for truck drivers looking to complete difficult work. The GMC Canyon is a midsize truck that's perfect for individuals who have moderate household projects and want a vehicle that performs well off-road. Families can also choose from GMC’s lineup of SUVs, including the extra capacious Yukon, the versatile and stylish Acadia, and the compact and efficient Terrain.

GMC’s taste for innovation has even drawn them into the electric vehicle market. In October 2020, they unveiled the Hummer EV, which comes in either a truck or an SUV configuration. This take on the traditional Hummer has taken what was considered one of the least fuel-efficient vehicles and turned it into a great environmental choice! It doesn’t sacrifice capability, however, as it's still highly capable of going off-road and taking on challenging feats of function.

GMC’s slogan, “Professional Grade,” makes it clear that they are producing vehicles that can and should be used for hard work; they make vehicles that are commercial-capable for the everyday person. If you’re a truck enthusiast who wants a powerhouse of a truck or an SUV that will power over backroads, you can trust GMC to deliver. The versatility of GMC vehicles means you can take your GMC from commuting to a weekend adventure to the job site without missing a beat.
